On Wednesday, Sheridan County Coroner Robert Byrd identified the 64-year-old woman who fell victim to a homicide on Sunday as Leonila Melvin.

Israel Macedo Melvin, a 22-year-old male, faced charges of second-degree murder in Sheridan County Circuit Court on late Tuesday afternoon. The Sheridan Police Department detectives established probable cause for the charge.

Melvin’s arrest occurred as part of a separate investigation on January 7, predating the report of the homicide. The discovery took place at 7:07 p.m. on the same day when a man found his wife deceased at their residence on Gladstone Street in Sheridan.

Upon officers’ arrival, they located the lifeless 64-year-old woman in the house, with preliminary findings suggesting blunt force trauma as the cause of death.

Previously, Melvin had been apprehended for an incident involving the use/under the influence of a controlled substance on the 1300 block of Coffeen Avenue in Sheridan.

Sheridan County Coroner Robert Byrd confirmed the victim’s identity on Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation remains active, with SPD detectives actively processing evidence and conducting follow-up tasks.
